How do American ‘best by’ dates work and what do the numbers on my product mean?
We strive to ensure all the products we send out are well in date. However, due to the nature of our business and the distances our products travel, it is occasionally possible to receive items that are past their ‘best by’ date. Unlike UK ‘best before’ dates, this does not mean the product is out of date or past its ‘sell by’ date. An American product that is a couple of weeks past its ‘best by’ date is generally still perfectly fine to eat or drink.
Where our products are short dated, this will be indicated on the site, but the majority have at least two months before they reach their ‘best by’ date. This is worth considering if you’re buying ahead for Christmas or a birthday, as it means it is best to wait until closer to the event before ordering , to ensure your products are well within their ‘best by’ date.
It is also important to be aware that the dates stamped on American products are not written in the same format as in the UK and Europe, placing month before da, rather than vice versa. If a product has a date of 01/11, for example, the ‘best by’ date is actually 11th January, not 1st November as with UK dates. Also, many American products have a code stamped on them which looks a lot like a ‘best by’ date when they are actually identifying codes for stores in the USA.
If you have any queries about the dates on your products, please call or email us and we will check them for you.
Do you sell wholesale?
How will I know if a product is out of stock?
